Kyrgyzstan Adoption

January 26, 2012: We are currently gathering updated procedures, fees, requirements, dossier, travel information, and more as we prepare to relaunch adoptions services in Kyrgyzstan. The infomation below is still in the process of being confirmed, and may change in the coming days and weeks. We appreciate your patience as we move ahead. Thank you.

Kyrgyzstan Adoption Program
CWA has worked in Kyrgyzstan since 2006. We are very excited about the opportunity to help these precious children find their forever families through our Kyrgyzstan adoption program. Located between China and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan is very mountainous and ruggedly beautiful, and the Kyrgyz people have a proud and distinctive cultural heritage. The population is approximately 80% Kyrgyz, Uzbek or other Central Asian nationalities, and 20% Caucasian. Many CWA families have now returned home with their children and are doing wonderful. CWA has established an office in the capital city of Bishkek, with a full time country facilitator to assist adoptive parents every step of the way while they are in Kyrgyzstan. We are looking for families with a heart for Kyrgyzstan’s beautiful children! CWA is now accepting applications for families wanting to adopt a child from 6 months to 14 years of age.

Children in the Kyrgyzstan Adoption Program
Currently boys and girls are available, families can state a preference, and most children are under age 2. According to the law, children are available for adoption from 3 months of age.  Adoption is one child at a time, unless you want siblings. However, they are rarely available and sibling groups tend to be much older children. The children are Eurasian, some are Asian in appearance, a few have Caucasian features. However, you cannot state a preference. In Kyrgyzstan, it is actually quicker to adopt a child age 6-24 months, as families wanting an older child tend to wait a little longer. Referral of a child will include photos and medical information as well as video. The wait for a referral is typically 3-6 months after your paperwork is submitted and approved in Kyrgyzstan, and total adoption time is about 8-12 months. Typically, most children come home from Kyrgyzstan at about 7½-8 months of age.

Kyrgyzstan Adoption Parent Eligibility
Married couples and single women may adopt. Couples must be in the age range of 25-52, and singles can be ages 30-52. Kyrgyzstan has indicated that there should be no more than 45 years age difference between mother and adoptive child. Prior divorce and other children in the home are acceptable. Kyrgyzstan requires proof of the adoptive parents’ health status and financial ability to provide a suitable environment for the child. Kyrgyzstan does have some restrictive regulations regarding the health of adopting parents. Therefore, if you are currently taking any prescription medications, or if you have any medical conditions, please call or email our Director of Intake to discuss your specific case so we can help you determine your eligibility. If you are taking a prescription medication for any psychological diagnosis—including depression, we need to know this up front. In addition, if there is any prior arrest record or prior criminal charge, please discuss this with us. While it does not automatically preclude you from adopting, each situation is addressed on a case-by-case basis. With international adoption, all medical information and criminal issues must be fully addressed and documented in your home study as well as other adoption related documents. By fully disclosing any relevant information prior to your applying with CWA, we can hopefully help you avoid the expenditure of time, money, and emotions, only to later discover Kyrgyzstan might not approve you to adopt.

Travel Process for Kyrgyzstan Adoption
Adoption from Kyrgyzstan can possibly be done in 2 trips. First trip could be up to 3 weeks in the country and a second trip is approximately 7-10 business days. Part of the 1st trip is a 10 day bonding period between a family and a child before documents could be submitted to court. Then documents are submitted to court and families need to wait for a court hearing. Parents must attend a court hearing. Then parents return home for approximately 6-8 weeks. The second trip only one parent is required to return to Kyrgyzstan to bring the child home. The second trip is approximately 7-10 business days. To date, all CWA families adopting from Kyrgyzstan have been able to complete their Kyrgyzstan adoption in one trip.
