Fundraising Idea from a CWA Family

The below email was sent to us from a past CWA family. If you are interested, please use the contact information given to contact the family directly!

“It has been a while since we have been in touch with CWA. We were blessed to use Christian World Adoption to bring our baby home from Guatemala! We are coming up on our 4th Gotcha Day Celebration, which is so hard to believe! We thought of you recently with a new adventure Jeff and I are starting. Adoption is obviously something very close to all of our hearts. For years Jeff and I have tried to figure out a way to “give back.” We feel so lucky to be the family we are and have our sweet daughter as part of our lives every day. For us to think of families not being able to make their adoption dreams come true, because of finances, makes us very sad, to say the least!
So, as a small part of our big dream, we have started a pampered Chef business for the purpose of donating half of our profits to an Adoption Agency. We can hold fundraising events through catalog shows,
Pampered Chef will donate a portion of sales to your agency and we will donate 50% of our profits to Christian World Adoption. Our bigger dream, although a little overwhelming, is to open a small charity and fundraise for individual families in their own Adoption process. We pray that one day, we can make it happen.

If the staff/volunteers/friends and/or families at CWA are interested is holding such an event, or knows of other adoption non profits interested, please use the information below to contact us for details.

We hope you have been well and enjoying the New Year!:)

Word of thanks from a CWA Ethiopia family

A nice comment from one of our current Ethiopia families:

“Thank you for knowing the system and for giving wise counsel all along. Thank you for being upfront and truthful with us through this process. And Thank you for caring about us and our kids! CWA is a class act and we feel confident and secure (even though the process is testing our patience) that we and (our child) are in good hands.

With much Gratitude,
Cris Remick”

Christmas in Acacia Village

From a CWA Ethiopia family who spent Ethiopian Christmas (January 7) in Ethiopia:

When we realized our January 10th court hearing would put us in Ethiopia over Ethiopian Christmas, we were thrilled.
On our first day visiting Acacia Village, the staff told us there would be a Christmas party the next day. “No pressure to come,” they said. “We know you might want individual time with the children.” But we knew this was something we wouldn’t want to miss, and it didn’t disappoint.

The day of the party, we spent some time with our children and then were told the party was starting. We were there with two other families who were also visiting their children before court, so we all scooped up our little ones and headed over to the large room that functions as a cafeteria. There was a Christmas tree in the corner of the room with presents wrapped in shiny paper underneath. Preparations were already underway for a coffee ceremony. All the toddlers were sitting on a blanket together wiggling with excitement; the older children were up and about, laughing and carrying on about the festivities. Staff from the CWA-Ethiopia office arrived, and I noticed that everyone was smiling. It was truly a joyous scene.
Once everyone was settled, the older children did several skits. To be honest, I can’t really say what most of them were about because they were all in Amharic. But I can say that the children are quite animated and very creative. At one point, Helen (the social worker at Acacia Village) leaned over and whispered to me that they were doing a skit about Jesus casting demons out of people. Not really your typical Christmas skit, but everyone loved it and there were many rounds of applause.
Perhaps my favorite part of the day was when Ben Dalton and Helen read the Christmas story. Ben read it in English, Helen read it in Amharic. It was a beautiful reminder to me that Christ’s birth is hope for all people and transcends all languages, races, ethnicities, and locations. After the reading of the Christmas story, there were Christmas treats for everyone. Cake, coffee, candy, Coke – everything was delicious. I remember looking back at one point to see several of the older boys sitting at a table, each with a glass bottle of orange soda next to their plates of cake. Most of the little ones were thrilled to have a sucker to enjoy.
As the party began to wind down, the children each received two presents to open that day – a traditional outfit and a new pair of shoes. Our son, like many young children, was more interested in the crinkly wrapping paper than his presents. Many of the children put on their traditional outfits.

We left Acacia Village that day feeling like we’d had the celebration we had hoped for when we found out we’d be in Ethiopia for Christmas. While it’s true that no orphanage or even the best transition home can ever be equal to a family, we are thankful for the great care the staff at Acacia Village provide for the children there. It was evident in every detail of this party. We are also thankful for the generous donor who provided the money to give the children presents – shoes, clothing, toys to call their own – this year.

Adoption Tax Credit — help available from the Taxpayer Advocate Service

Judging by requests for information from CWA parents applying for the Adoption Tax Credit, IRS procedures for receiving this credit have become much more stringent over the past year, and adoptive parents are having a more difficult time receiving the credit they are allowed by law in the year their adoption is finalized.

If you need assistance in this process, one resource is the IRS’s own Taxpayer Advocate Service (800-829-3676). Click on this link for more information about this free service.

American Medical News Article

Here’s a link to a good article on the importance of adopting families establishing a good relationship with their doctor when they bring an adopted child into their family. Parents who are lucky enough to have a doctor nearby who specializes in adopted children are very fortunate. But even a well-trained family doctor can provide the special care needed for these special children if he/she is willing to take a little extra time to gather the necessary information that is available.
